Advocacy for Education at the Heart of Conservation
The Urgency of Action around the PNKB
This photo serves as a poignant testimony that speaks for itself.
It illustrates a cruel paradox: these children live on the edge of a global biodiversity treasure, the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP), yet they are deprived of the most basic fundamental right: a decent education. When observing this "straw school," we witness indignity at the heart of precariousness.
It is a temporary structure that protects neither from the scorching sun nor from the region's torrential rains. Under these inhumane conditions, as soon as the rain falls, school stops. Teaching materials are destroyed, and children are exposed to the cold and disease. Beyond the physical toll, the psychological impact is devastating: studying in a straw hut sends a message of exclusion that devalues knowledge and shatters academic perseverance.
For NPADR asbl, the challenge is clear: we must activate the "Nexus" between education and conservation.
The school is the first line of defense against poaching.
A child who is not in school becomes an easy recruit for illegal networks; by financing solid infrastructure, we stabilize children within a secure environment, keeping them away from extractive activities.
Education is the primary line of defense for biodiversity. Furthermore, in these conflict zones, the absence of schools leaves a vacuum that armed groups are eager to fill. Investing in NPADR is an investment in peace: an educated child will choose ecotourism or sustainable agriculture over taking up arms.
This support aligns directly with the priorities of major donors: for the World Bank, it is a matter of human capital for the DRC’s economy; for the EU and USAID, it is a lever for governance and regional stability; for UNESCO, it is imperative to protect the communities living adjacent to a World Heritage site; and for the AFD, it is about training the eco-citizens of the ecological transition.
In short, every drop of rain that pierces through this straw roof erases a lesson and pushes a child one step closer to the forest for survival. Supporting NPADR means replacing straw with concrete, and poaching with hope.
To save the mountain gorillas, let us start by saving the schools of their neighbors.
